Discernment - Changes are Coming...

Hey Everyone!

As some of you may have heard, there are some changes coming to Wesley next year. Through conversations with the community, in discernment, and through prayer we have decided to go through with the idea of changing the structure of when the turnover of positions in Wesley will happen. In the past, Wesley has had Discernment team start in early February and go until late April talking about the things that Amanda and Rachel have talked about in the other blogs. Once CMT is discerned, they only have about two weeks to get their teams together for the next year because they have so little time before summer break. This puts a lot of pressure on the new CMT to rush things. This is one of the reasons that prompted the idea of changing the turnover process. Another reason that encouraged us to look at the change is how little time CMT has together to gain experience before Welcome Week. Welcome Week requires a lot of planning and with a new CMT just getting used to their roles, it can be a struggle.

Overall, time and experience were the main topics of our discussion for the changeover.

Once we figured that we would go this route, the next question was how? What are the logistics of this turnover? The original idea that was presented was to have the turnover happen at the beginning of Spring semester. It made sense; this would solve the problem of time and the problem of experience for Welcome Week because they would have a whole semester together. But something was brought up from multiple people in the community which were the retreats. The retreats are a huge part of Wesley’s second semester, and they take a long time to plan. So much time that it would be a lot for a new CMT to plan in a month.

Now we are back to square one. After some more conversations with the community we heard a couple of suggestions about having the turnover after Spring Break. After long discussions on how we could do this, we figured out a strategy to how this will work.

With the new turnover, Discernment team will now start sometime in October, and the new CMT should be discerned by early February. This gives the new CMT plenty of time to pick their teams for the next year, and allow the ministry leaders and their teams time to get together and gain experience with each other. Once we come back from Spring Break we will have a new CMT and new teams.

I really like this new turnover because it makes a lot of sense to me. The way we do it now makes the process seem so cramped to get things done before Summer break. The CMT also doesn’t have a lot of time to gel before Welcome Week. With the new turnover, the CMT will have a few months to come together and grow together in their roles at Wesley. This will also allow the teams to hit the ground running in the fall semester. The turnover also allows for there for be younger leadership starting in the second semester. Giving younger students an opportunity to lead would be a great thing for us and for the younger students.

I would like to thank everyone who has given us input on their opinions during the discernment process. It has allowed great conversation to happen through Wesley and it helps us vision what we as a community want Wesley to be. The Discernment process doesn’t happen if there is no communication with the community, so thank you. Continue to have these great conversations, and if you have any comments or questions please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!
